Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from skipper Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in several interviews in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes against Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment after England suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this game."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead after three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term future in the side, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
